Chapter 8

When I had turned back into a villager, I put one foot forward and dropped onto my other knee, as though I had just completed a performance. With my amberite armor gleaming in the torchlight, I spread my arms and shouted, “Ta-daaa!”

But before the last “a” was out of my mouth, the Ender King teleported to my side and wrapped his arm around my neck, putting me in a painful headlock. Patton the pillager had jumped onto the table too. He held a loaded crossbow to my chest. Of course, I was wearing my amberite armor, so it wouldn’t have done any damage.

“Calm down, guys,” I said. “It’s me—”

“Jimmy?!?” Claire gasped.

I looked at her and smiled. “Exactly.”

The Ender King pulled his arm tighter against my neck. “How do we know you’re the real Jimmy Slade? Jimmy was declared dead a year ago.”

“It’s me. I swear. Ask my mom or Emma. Just look at my armor.”

“Probably just painted netherite,” Swagger said, pulling a netherite sword and approaching the table.

“What would Emma know about this?” Claire asked, cautiously approaching the table and looking at me.

“I resurrected or respawned or came back through a space-time worm hole or … whatever just yesterday. I appeared at my parents’ house. I visited Emma before I came here.”

Patton, still holding his loaded crossbow against my chest, looked at the Ender King. “Do you believe this clown?”

The Ender King relaxed his hold on me a little bit, but didn’t let me go. “I’m not sure. If you’re really Jimmy Slade, why were you a cat just a moment ago?”

I looked over at Oswald and Morningflower. They were rolling on the ground, twitching as though they were having seizures. All I could hear was meows and hisses, but I knew they were having a good belly laugh at my expense. Or, maybe even at the Ender King’s. Stupid cats.

“My mom told me we were at war with enemies from the other side of the universe barrier. She said if I revealed myself, our enemies might come after me. So I traveled here in disguise.”

Swagger laughed. “That sounds like Jimmy all right. What a dumb idea.”

“It was my mom’s idea,” I said, glowering at Swagger. “You take that back.”

Swagger clearly regretted what he had said. He swallowed hard and looked anywhere but at me.

“Let’s not start the bickering between you two again,” the Ender King said. He turned to Claire. “Do you think this is Jimmy?”

She stepped closer. “It looks like Jimmy. And, actually, just before he changed from a cat into his villager form, I sensed something about him. Like a connection.”

“This is ridiculous,” Herobrine said, slapping his hand on the table. “Of course that’s Jimmy. No one else would reveal himself in such a lame way. Let him go.”

I didn’t like what Herobrine said about me, but it got the job done. The Ender King released his grip, and Captain Patton lowered his crossbow. I shrugged my shoulders and straightened my robe. The Ender King teleported off the table and the pillager hopped down.
